A Slinkachu?!?

As part of my new assignment I have been asked to produce six images that show the interpretations of different words. One of the words which I stumbled across was “slinkachu”, I had no idea what this word meant or the images that were created from it. After researching it I found myself to be enthralled by this genre of photography. These images consist of miniature figures and other small objects being installed into an everyday setting which were left on the streets to create surprise for the people in the city. This combination of street art and installation allow us to become more aware of our surroundings, and also enhance the feeling of being lost and alone in such a big city. Although these installation are kept up to be appreciated by the public, they are mainly shown through photography which allow them to become more evident to a wider public.

Martin Creed

4/10/13

Today I was urged to open my mind to the work of Martin Creed, in order to embrace his vision of what he believes to be conceptual art. For this I took a trip to the Ferens Art Gallery, this trip consisted of my seeing Creeds work first hand allowing me to gain my own opinion of his work. This was then followed by a brief talk about Martin Creed, discussing his life, ambitions and his thought on his work. However the only responses I received from this was that he himself was unsure on what his work meant and had no idea why he did it. I know that art is open to a number of meanings and interpretations, but surely he must of had an initial idea that put a kick-start into his art. After his fame from winning the turner prize, it seems that he his trying to get away with as little as possible and putting under the name of “conceptual art”.

When viewing his exhibition I either found his work to be dull or uncomfortable. One piece in particular that I disliked was the one showing four screens of different people forcing themselves to be sick. Creeds reasoning for this piece was that he wanted to document “natural” bodily reaction. However I am unable to see how this was portrayed as all of the subjects in this where forcing themselves to bring up the vomit in the first place, so therefore there was nothing natural about it.

To end my Martin Creed experience I took part in a debate which discussed people views on him as an artist and his work. Although this allowed me to engage with the various opinions that individuals had, and let me see things through a range on perspectives I still feel the same. However that just my opinion and I am sure that many people will disagree with me and think quite positively about him.

Holla!
